Carriage Driving
Carriage driving is becoming a more and more popular equestrian sport due to the possible involvement of the whole family and the fact that there is no upper age limitation. Many horse owners want to use their family horse as versatile as possibly and often discover horse carriage driving for themselves and the horse as the ideal form of sport and recreation. In former times horse-drawn vehicles and carriage horses were part of every-day life, experienced whips were not far. Nowadays good carriage drivers are rare, but if one enquires at local or regional carriage driving associations or clubs, experienced help is at hand easily. To avoid a distressed driver and horses or bad accidents, it is advisable to train with an instructor: modern traffic density and speed are a particluar challenge for a horse and the novice whip. Friends of carriage driving are easily found through driving clubs, associations, on events or in the internet in forums and mailing groups. You might find that this part of the equestrian sports world is an exceptionally friendly and approachable community: always trying to help each other, giving helpful hints and tips to the novice whip and welcoming to people new to horse driving. It has to be mentioned that this equestrian sport requires quite serious investments into the right equipment, vehicle, courses, transport for horse(s) and cart etc. But it is not a sport limited to the "upper class" only any more: luckily there are reasonable, but very good and safe products made of modern materials available and the market for equestrian driving equipment is quite competitive. Also, equipment and manufactured vehicles are always being improved and tested. Well trained and prepared, it is a very rewarding sport and will be fun for both, horse and human.
